If you are looking for a phone which is glossy yet heavy? Then NOKIA’s N81 is the
one for you. A slider phone having upper and lower panels
of shiny plastic and metallic side panel, with inbuilt speaker. This phone allows
you to access features like camera, music players, and games without sliding out
the key pad.
The D-pad is stiff and takes some getting used to, but the dedicated board key (for
gaming) above the screen is comfortable to use. Another set of key is dedicated
to the music player and allows you to play, stop and change a track without sliding
open the pone. The backlit alphanumerical keypad on the lower panel is also easy
on the fingers.
Feature PackedThe N81 comes with a 2.0
megapixel camera, MP3 player, visual radio, N-Gage games (preview versions as of
now), Nokia Maps and search facility. The image quality of the camera is not impressive,
although it allows the user to capture image in VGA, 1.3 megapixel and 2.0 megapixel
mode – a standard feature of Sony Ericsson phones. Capturing pictures, however,
troublesome. You need to hold the dedicated camera key for over five seconds to
start the camera and the pictures can be taken by pressing the same key. Press the
volume keys hard and you will discover that they turn into zoom in and zoom out
keys, when the camera is on.
The N81 8 GB is not only about having fun. It can also be used as a smartphone that
runs on Symbian Series 60 (3rd edition) operating system and offers a number of
applications such as PD reader and notes.
Loads of memoryAlthough the phone comes
with 8GB mass memory, it functions smoothly and it doesn’t hang (unlike the N 91).
A search option is added to the home page that allows you to search for information
on the device and the internet, just like the Palm Treo 750.
Offering phones with preloaded content seems to be a new trend in high-end phones,
but Nokia has taken a different approach, instead of loading the content on the
phone, the company has offered top 10 English music videos, English songs, Hindi
songs, best comedy scenes and the all time Hindi classic Sholay, on a CD, bundled
with the sales pack. However, one needs to load this content and get it activated
by sending an SMS, which can be a bit time consuming.
Battery life was average for such a feature-rich device – a single charge latest
for a day with three to four hours of music and talktime.
Over all, this phone can be cherished for its features and performance!
